The Truth about Anxiety

Being anxious is a normal, everyday human emotion. Think back to your first day at a new school, your first driving lesson, your first kiss, your wedding day or the birth of your children. Did you experience anxious thoughts and emotions at these times? Of course, you wouldn't be human if you didn't. But sometimes anxious thoughts become habitual, to the extent where a diagnosis of 'anxiety' may be given, and our quality of life begins to suffer.

At Learn to Relax, we view anxious thoughts and emotions in a particular way. "Anxiety is the result of chronic over-stimulation of the central nervous system", says Learn to Relax anxiety specialist Kylie Shacklock. "The good news is that we CAN learn how to consciously control our nervous system and bring it back into balance. We can also learn to free ourselves of the anxious and worrying thoughts that limit us. All we have to do is learn these skills and then practice them. This is what the Learn to Relax program is all about."

The Four-step Process to Get Rid of Anxiety

When you become a client at Learn to Relax you'll learn and practice our four-step process to get rid of anxiety in the long term. 

Step 1: Awareness


Before we can do anything about our stress, we must first become aware that it is there. We'll train you to recognise the signs and symptoms of stress in both body and mind.

Step2: Skills

You'll learn a range of simple, practical stress management skills to control your nervous system, become more resilient to stress and let go of anxious thoughts.

Step 3: Integration


To gain the benefits of any skill you have to practice it! You'll learn how to integrate stress management techniques into your everyday life so that they become normal for you.

Step 4: Support


When you become a Learn to Relax client you'll receive all the support mechanisms and tools you need to get rid of anxiety. The Learn to Relax program includes a comprehensive workbook, six CDs and phone and email support. 

Medicare Rebates

Program facilitator Kylie Shacklock is a medicare-registered allied health professional. Medicare rebates are available for the Learn to Relax program under the Better Access to Mental Health Care program. A GP referral is required. Click here to view current rebates.
