Learning to Relax is an introductory workshop for students in years 3 and above.
When we think of relaxation we usually think of activities like watching TV, playing games on a computer or catching up with friends. All of these activities have an important place in the life of any young person. However, whilst they might be enjoyable, they’re unable to provide the deep rest needed to revitalise young bodies and minds. In fact, they can place more strain on an already over-stimulated nervous system.
Relaxation isn’t just about taking time-out or ‘veg-ing’ on the couch. True relaxation is a physiological state of deep rest where the body’s metabolism slows down. This biological state, called the relaxation response, acts to balance the strain placed on our bodies through constant stimulation.
In this workshop, students will:
Learn about stress and relaxation and how to recognise the physical and psychological difference between the two
Learn a simple and fun breathing technique to relax themselves at will, and
Identify and discuss opportunities to bring the technique into their everyday lives.
Workshop materials include printed notes and mp3 audio of the breathing technique practiced during the session.
